NYC Health + Hospitals is committed to fostering an inclusive and accessible environment for all patients and staff, including anyone who may have a disability. Through the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, we provide education on the use of specialized communication tools that support individuals who are blind, have low vision, are deaf or hard of hearing, have aphasia, or have other varying disabilities. We also lead trainings on disability inclusion and collaborate with stakeholders across the system to develop policies and practices that promote equitable access, with a strong focus on ensuring accessibility for both patients and employees.
Our work is grounded in the belief that awareness, accessibility, and understanding are essential to delivering high-quality, compassionate care. Through engaging educational sessions, we help staff better understand what constitutes a disability—whether visible or non-apparent—and how it shapes the experiences of colleagues and patients in healthcare settings. Participants learn respectful, person-centered language, appropriate behaviors, and practical strategies to foster inclusion—ensuring that everyone feels seen, supported, and valued.
