To successfully build trust with patients and engage them in their care, frontline healthcare staff members must elicit from patients their own motivation and commitment to changing their behaviors and managing their health.
This course is part one of a two-part series that aims to provide an overview of the main concepts of Motivational Interviewing, while also exploring the ways frontline healthcare staff can apply these concepts.
Motivational Interviewing (MI), a counseling strategy, focuses on maintaining an openness to a way of thinking and working that is collaborative. MI requires staff to explore a patient’s strengths, experiences and perspectives. The purpose of this course is to provide a basic understanding of the theories and techniques that are used in MI. Motivational Interviewing is introduced by defining MI and discussing the origin. The course also provides healthcare staff with an overview of the “way of being” which is referred to as the spirit of MI. Finally, opened-ended questions, affirmations, reflections, and summaries are discussed to provide context for effective and appropriate communication strategies.
