E-Cigarettes: A Clinical Update

This clinical update  on e-cigarettes provides background data on E-cigarettes and use of nicotine–containing e-cigarettes in young adults and youth. In addition, E-cigarettes and Vaping product use Associated Lung Injury (EVALI), is discussed along with the potential benefits e-cigarettes could have in smoking cessation when compared with current medications. Health effects of e-cigarettes beyond EVALI is also covered.

Learning Objectives:

1. Describe at least three important aspects of a vaping history and explain how a Juul pod mod differs from prior generations of e-cigarettes.

2. Distinguish the effect of nicotine on youth and young adults compared with its effect on people who are older.

3. Identify one substance that was associated with most but not all cases of EVALIand appreciate the importance of a full vaping history in the diagnosis of EVALI.

4. Compare quit rates for the e-cigarette group versus nicotine replacement therapy group in the Hajek 2019 study and describe one finding that could affect the role of e-cigarettes in smoking cessation.

5. List 2 pulmonary diseases that have been linked with exclusive e-cigarette use in population studies.
