The goal of this Applying Core Skills in Family Support and Training (FST) is to increase the capability of NYC Health + Hospitals’ workforce to perform specific activities in anticipation of a decline in hospital demand and a rise in the need for home and community-based services. This module will enable learners to understand the purpose and components of FST. The course discusses the importance of core skills in providing FST serves including person-centered planning, motivational interviewing, trauma-informed care, cultural competence and promoting racial equality. Understanding how to use and apply these skills when providing CPST services is essential for the workforce of tomorrow. These increased skills will enable direct care workers to be effective care team members and will prepare new members to enter the workforce better prepared as part of an ongoing pipeline of workers. The workforce development focus areas presented will improve services inside the hospital and help improve the workforce’s ability to provide care outside of an institutionalized setting.
