Purpose: In this module, participants will be updated on best practices in opioid therapy for pain for those with serious illness. A case study featuring a 52-year-old woman suffering from refractory chronic lower back pain (CLBP) is presented, with a focus on pharmacological and nonpharmacological approaches, opioid titration, and serious illness goals discussion. In this example, participants will be supplied with an overview of the patients’ chief complaint, current state, and corresponding medical and family history.
