Professional Boundaries provide the framework for healthy relationships between providers and patients. When providing patient centered care, there may be times that the professional boundary lines become blurred. Frontline healthcare staff must maintain healthy professional boundaries to keep the provider-patient relationship safe and the focus on the patient’s immediate needs.
This course is part one of a two-part series that explores personal and professional boundaries, while also discussing the importance of boundaries for both the worker and the patient.
Professional boundaries are essential in frontline work because staff are working on an intense level with vulnerable patients. In this course, healthcare professionals will learn how to clearly establish limits that allow for safe relationships between service providers and their patients. The course emphasizes the importance of practicing workplace policies, professional ethics and maintaining positive connections with all members of the healthcare community. The benefits of creating a secure and therapeutic environment for providers and patients is reviewed. Examples of unprofessional behaviors will be provided and discussed, so that participants are aware of specific situations that may lead to boundary crossing.
