Care Management: Basics of Mental Illness and Crisis Management – Part 3

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S., the 3rd leading cause of death for people aged 10–24 and the 2nd leading cause of death for people aged 15–24.  When people are in crisis, such as this, it is essential that healthcare and social service providers interacting with patients have the tools and resources available to assess and assist effectively.  Healthcare workers ability to properly assess a patient’s perception and coping techniques will have one of the biggest impacts on their ability to self-manage.

This course is part three of a four-part series that aims to provide an overview of mental illnesses, while also exploring the role frontline healthcare staff play in managing and supporting these conditions.

Patients often perceive a chronic disease diagnosis as a crisis.  An appropriate front-line care coordination response requires understanding a patient’s support systems and coping strategies.  In this course, techniques that can be used for crisis management are examined.  The course reviews the types of events or situations that may lead to a crisis in a patient’s life.  Strategies that may help patients deal with their crisis are reviewed. Medical, psychiatric, and situational crisis are explored, as well as how patients address them with positive and negative coping strategies.
